Promoting British Values June 2017

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

 The government has set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At St Mary’s these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

The children at St Mary’s have  a right to be heard, understand Team Work and treat others with respect.

School Council are voted for by the children and renewed yearly. - Team Captains are voted for by the children. - Children are asked to contribute to planning and the curriculum for CLJ. - During all PE lessons, team work and sportsmanship is encouraged. - Circle Time in PSHE requires children to listen respectively. - Our school behaviour policy involves weekly

Behaviour in school is exceptional. - Children respect each other and bullying is rarely seen. - Children show respect for visitors to our school. - Children are proud of their school and can express this pride.

Children at St Mary’s CE Primary School will learn about the importance of laws, including those that govern their class, school or the country. Consequences of breaking the law and rules. They will understand how to keep safe and who can help them to remain safe.

Children follow the Good to be Green behaviour system. This links to our motto of Treating each other as we wish to be treated, This underpins our school Friendship Charter which is in place across the whole school. We all are asked to remind each other including the Head teacher, Teachers, Classroom Assistants, Lunchtime Supervisors and the children. - SLT will carry out behaviour walks and behaviour for learning walks. - Assemblies will remind children on E Safety, how to keep safe and who can help them to stay safe. Also, discussions on their right to feel safe. - Police talk to the children  about ways to behave outside school. - PSHE lessons reminding the children of their rights and responsibilities.

 

 

 

Children are able to articulate how and why we need to behave in school and in society. They can demonstrate they understand acceptable behaviour through actions. - Children know they have a right but also know that with that right comes responsibility. - Children are able to discuss important issues and respectfully share their ideas with others. - Children feel safe and know who can help them stay safe.

Children at St Marys  understand that they have a right to stay safe and should make safe choices. They have a right to be heard.

Children are able to show independence in learning and to think for themselves. - The learning environment encourages them to make safe decisions. - Children are offered a broad and balanced curriculum and children are able to make choices within the curriculum. - Children make sensible choices at lunch time. - School assemblies and PHSE lessons remind them of their rights and how to keep safe. - A wide variety of Extra Curricular activities take place and children make choices on which and how many they would like to attend. - Children proudly represent the school outside the school environment  during competitions, dance extravaganzas, visiting the elderly or during Songbirds

They can speak out when they are feeling unsafe. - Children take responsibility for their own actions and understand the consequences of their actions. - Children are encouraged to make sensible choices that impact on their school life and life beyond school. - Children show a thirst for learning and make choices that enhance their education. - Children are consulted on many aspects of school life and they can demonstrate freedom of thought and actions

Mutual Respect and the Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs

Respect and consideration for others feelings are fundamental to our school values. It is the centre of all that we do. Treating each other as we wish to be treated is part of our Friendship Charter.

Children are taught through whole school assemblies, class assemblies, RE and PHSE that respect is not just a school value, it is a life value and should be used in or out of school. This is centred around our school motto of Courtesy, Consideration and Respect. - Displays around the school promote respect for others both in our own community and online. - SLT carry out learning, behaviour and behaviour for learning walks regularly. - Records are kept of collective worship. - A balanced RE curriculum is in place. Children learn to respect cultural diversity and learn to recognise the richness diversity brings. - Our school staff, pupils and community are diverse and multicultural and we feel this helps to enhance our pupils own understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. - The School celebrates festivals of other cultures. - The School is part of  an Alliance and this link offers a network of diverse schools.

Children can articulate that  treating each other as they wish to be treated  is a school value and say why  it is important, how they show respect to others and understand their right to be respected. - Children’s behaviour demonstrates their good understanding of this value. - Children are able to talk about different faiths and cultures that they learn about. They are not afraid to ask respectful questions to increase their knowledge of other faiths. - Children are proud to talk about their culture and beliefs. - Children, staff and visitors are challenged if they are disrespectful to others or show disrespect to fundamental British values including extremist views in any way.
